Former New Jersey Senator Bob Menendez (D) is seeking a pardon from President Donald Trump after being sentenced to 11 years in prison on Wednesday for charges related to bribery and corruption. Released by the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Southern District of New York, the sentencing revealed that Menendez, along with Wael Hana and Fred Daibes, were convicted for bribery, foreign agent, and obstruction of justice offenses.
Hana and Daibes received sentences of more than eight years and seven years, respectively. Menendez stated, “President Trump is right. This process is political, and it’s corrupted to the core. I hope President Trump cleans up the cesspool and restores the integrity to the system.”Menendez was indicted in September 2023 on three federal counts alleging he accepted bribes and used his power and influence as a senator to protect and enrich three businessmen: Fred Daibes, Jose Uribe, and Wael Hana. The indictment also claimed he benefited Egypt’s government. Additionally, Menendez was accused of accepting bribes from Qatar’s royal family in exchange for positive remarks about the country. According to the indictment, Menendez was offered wristwatches valued between $10,000 and $24,000.In June 2022, FBI agents searched Menendez’s home and discovered $486,461 in cash and 13 gold bars. The gold bars were subsequently confiscated.
