Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón announced that his office will review new evidence presented in a petition by the attorneys of Erik and Lyle Menendez, who were convicted in 1996 for the murders of their parents. The brothers' legal team argues that newly available information, including a letter written by Erik Menendez detailing alleged sexual abuse by his father, warrants resentencing.
Gascón said there is no question the brothers committed the murders, but that his office will be reviewing new evidence and will make a decision on whether it warrants a resentencingto determine whether they should be serving life sentences for killing their parents in their Beverly Hills mansion more than 35 years ago, the city's district attorney said Thursday.
