The highly anticipated resentencing hearing for Erik and Lyle Menendez, convicted of murdering their parents in 1989, has been pushed back due to the devastating wildfires ravaging Los Angeles County. The hearing, originally scheduled for January 30-31, will now take place from March 20-21.

The resentencing hearing for the Menendez brothers has been postponed from January 30-31 to March 20-21 due to the impact of recent wildfires in Los Angeles County. Erik and Lyle Menendez had been scheduled to appear in court as they seek freedom after being sentenced to life in prison for the 1989 murders of their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez.

The postponement was announced by the LA County District Attorney Nathan Hochman's office, stating that the wildfires significantly disrupted the extensive preparations required for the hearings. Prosecutors and defense counsel met with LA Superior Court Judge Michael Jesic on Friday to set the new date. Los Angeles County is currently grappling with two destructive wildfires, the Palisades and Eaton fires, which have resulted in thousands of structures being destroyed and at least 27 fatalities. Both fires ignited on January 7th. While these wildfires temporarily affected the operations of some courthouses in the county, all 36 courthouses remain open, according to the LA Superior Court. Hochman previously mentioned having conversations with the Menendez brothers' relatives but emphasized that he is still reviewing the case facts and hasn't made a decision regarding his stance on their bid for freedom. Erik and Lyle Menendez were convicted in 1996 for the murders of their parents, with the defense arguing self-defense due to years of sexual abuse by their father, while the prosecution maintained the murders were motivated by financial gain. At the time of the crime, Lyle was 21 and Erik was 18, both receiving two consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole
