Queensland's Luke Hambleton uses men's circles to improve his mental health and become a better husband and dad.
Men's mental health advocates want to use support groups to help lower the rate of suicide.Organisers of these groups hope their impact will be felt by those attending sessions now as well as the next generation of men.
Founder of the Outback Mind Foundation Aaron Schultz has 11 men's circles across regional Queensland where men gather to speak freely. Rockhampton psychologist Helen Madell said it was important for men to have safe spaces to bond and see positive role models."The younger generation has better mental health literacy, but there is a whole lot of stigma that still exists.
"I was never quite off the rails, but I was juggling the highs and the lows — just trying to aim for a steady average is what we do now."Mr Hambleton moved to Gladstone during the LNG boom, a period in the early 2010s which saw 14,000 new jobs in the region.Together the pair have two young children and they also juggle a small family tree-lopping business."It's given me a vocabulary … to explain my feelings and understand other people's feelings.
"Slowly, bit by bit, we're breaking down those barriers … and we're helping men become better men for the sake of the wider community."
