Several people in immigration custody at Otay Mesa Detention Center said that a CoreCivic official stared at them lewdly after walking into their cells unannounced
Several men held in immigration custody in San Diego said that on a recent morning, a facility staff member walked into their cells unannounced to stare at them lewdly.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the government agency responsible for immigration detention, did not respond to a request for comment.CoreCivic, the private prison company that owns and operates the facility and employs the staff member in question, said that it was aware of the allegations and that the situation is being “investigated fully.” Spokesman Matthew Davio said that criminal sexual abuse allegations at CoreCivic facilities are always reported to outside law enforcement.
“I said, ‘Hey dude what are you doing there?’” Mercado recalled. “He said, ‘I’m looking for something big.’ That made me more uncomfortable. I said, ‘What the ?’ And I sat up.” “He was looking at my penis,” Coto said in Spanish. “I had it covered, but I could tell what he was looking at. I said, ‘What’s going on?’”Coto said that when he protested the employee’s presence, the staff member looked nervous. Then the employee said he was looking for a bucket.“I can’t even sleep. I think he could come into my cell,” Coto said. “I start to think about how a person could abuse my children as well like this person tried to abuse me.
