A hand injury caused Klinko to give up the harp. Such a development could have been personally catastrophic, but he speaks of it in reverent terms. Klinko sold his harps and bought $100,000 worth of photo equipment. He purchased a book by Ansel Adams as well as a storefront mannequin. The eight-to-10 hours a day he’d spent on the harp were spent studying his new implement and its intricacies. He got small assignments in Paris that gradually led to bigger work with Interview magazine, the London Sunday Times and L’oréal. A 1999 shoot for the model Iman — a desirable assignment in and of itself — opened another door.
