It’s a sad fact of history that half of the deaths of American military personnel occurred when Americans took up arms against each other from 1861-65
Camp Curtin was commemorated in other ways before the monument was dedicated in 1922. This 1916 painting by C. Day Rudy in Camp Curtin Memorial-Mitchell United Methodist Church depicts Christ comforting a wounded Civil War soldier. The church, located beside the monument at Sixth and Woodbine streets, closed in 2019.
Memorial Day is one of the nation’s most important holidays. It began in 1868 after the Civil War to honor and mourn U.S. military personnel who died while serving in the nation’s armed forces. Until 1970, the nation commemorated Memorial Day on May 30, but in 1971, it was changed to the last Monday in May.
