All seven members of BTS will fulfill South Korea’s mandatory national military service, the band’s label said on Monday, ending months of speculation over whether the world’s biggest K-Pop group may be granted a special exemption from the rule.... [+]on Twitter, label BigHit Music said the band members will move forward “with plans to fulfill their military service” after just having performed as part of Busan’s bid to host the 2030 World Expo.
The group’s oldest member, Jin—who is set to turn 30 later this year—will be the first member to enlist after releasing his first solo album in October, the statement added. The other six members of the band also plan to enlist after Jin but exact time frames were not mentioned. The label said it expects the seven pop stars to reunite as a group once again around 2025 after everyone has completed their service requirements.South Korean law requires all able-bodied men between the ages of 18 to 35 to serve in the country’s military for either 18, 20 or 21 months—for the army, navy, or air force respectively. The law, however, includes special exemptions for certain athletes and artists who represent the country on the global stage.
