Two-time Grammy Award-winner Melissa Etheridge, now on a joint-tour with Jewel, bonded with five inmates at Topeka Correctional Facility in her native Kansas. She based her new song, “A Burni…
Melissa Etheridge performs to an overflow crowd on the Palomino Stage on the opening day of the Stagecoach Country Music Festival at the Empire Pole Club in Indio on Friday, Apr. 28, 2023. Singing on stage immediately after a potent joint performance by Bruce Springsteen and Bon Jovi could make even the most seasoned of artists feel jittery, especially with Paul McCartney sitting front and center in the audience.
How concerned should Jewel be about having to follow Etheridge on stage during their joint tour, which opened July 11 in Montana and includes a Tuesday concert at The Shell in San Diego?“I don’t know,” Etheridge replied with a laugh. “I just do the best I can and everything else works out.”Despite her repeated efforts to help him, Etheridge’s son, Beckett Cypheridge, died in 2020 from causes related to opioid addiction. He got hooked following a snowboarding accident when he was 17.
It features some of her biggest hits, including “Come To My Window” and “I’m the Only One,” along with “The Shadow of a Black Crow,” a bluesy ode she wrote to her late son. Even more moving is “I’m a Burning Woman,” the inspirational song she wrote about, and for, the inmates she had befriended.
Etheridge, 63, spoke with the San Diego Union-Tribune from a recent concert tour stop in Colorado. These are edited excepts from that conversation.I did not envy Jelly Roll having had to follow you on stage at the MusiCares concert. Can you recall when, early in your career, you were an opening act and wanted to make a big impression on audiences that — for the most part — were not there to hear you?Ha! Yes, I do have memories of that.
