Train strikes that threatened to bring Melbourne’s public transport network to a halt have been called off after the Rail Tram and Bus Union (RTBU) reached an in-principle agreement with Metro Trains during Sunday night crisis talks.

Rail network operations staff were planning to walk off the job on Friday 6 and Wednesday 11 October 2023, over what the RTBU said was Metro Trains failure to agree to “decent conditions” for its members.

“We are pleased to have reached a fair and mutually beneficial agreement with the RTBU and provide certainty for our Rail Operations Division employees,” Metro Trains CEO Raymond O’Flaherty told SkyNews.com.au. “This is a great outcome for members that would not have been possible without the solidarity, persistence, commitment and hard work of our officials, bargaining team, delegates and members,” RTBU Secretary Vik Sharma said in a statement.
