An Australian magistrate ruled that the arson attack on a Melbourne synagogue was motivated by mental illness not antisemitism. The perpetrator Angelo Loras was sentenced to four months in prison and ordered to continue medical treatment for schizophrenia.

MELBOURNE Australia AP – A Melbourne man who set fire to a synagogue while worshippers were inside has been determined by an Australian magistrate to have been motivated by mental illness rather than antisemitism. Angelo Loras aged 35 had previously pleaded guilty to charges of arson and recklessly endangering the lives of people. The incident occurred on July 4 when Loras doused the front door of the East Melbourne Synagogue with a flammable liquid and then ignited it.

At the time of the attack approximately 20 worshippers were inside the synagogue sharing a Shabbat meal. Fortunately despite the severity of the fire no one was injured during the incident. The ruling sheds light on a complex situation amid a backdrop of increased reports of antisemitic and Islamophobic incidents across Australia particularly since the onset of the conflict between Israel and Hamas in 2023. Government officials initially suspected the arson attack on the East Melbourne Synagogue also known as the East Melbourne Hebrew Congregation to be a hate crime. The day following the incident Prime Minister Anthony Albanese issued a statement condemning the act as cowardly an act of violence and antisemitism declaring that such acts have no place in Australian society. However Magistrate Malcolm Thomas after reviewing the evidence and considering the defendant's mental state ruled that Loras was not driven by antisemitism. Instead the magistrate determined that Loras was suffering from a terrifying delusion which stemmed from his failure to adhere to his medication schedule for schizophrenia. The court sentenced Loras to a prison term of four months which was less than the 138 days he had already served in custody. Although Loras was eligible for release on Monday he was also mandated to continue receiving medical treatment for his schizophrenia for a duration of 20 months in addition to performing unpaid community service. The case has also brought into focus other instances of suspected antisemitism within Melbourne. The Australian government has previously attributed an earlier arson attack on another Melbourne synagogue to Iran. Security officials have characterized this earlier attack as an antisemitic crime designed to undermine social cohesion within Australia. Australian intelligence agencies have accused Iran's paramilitary Revolutionary Guards of orchestrating arson attacks on Melbourne's Adass Israel Synagogue in December of the previous year along with a separate arson attack on a Sydney kosher food business two months prior to that. Iran has consistently denied any involvement in these incidents. Both of the buildings targeted suffered significant damage as a result of the fires. In relation to the East Melbourne Synagogue attack Loras was apprehended two days after the incident. During the police investigation Loras claimed that he believed the synagogue to be a residential address. Magistrate Thomas advised the Jewish congregation to refrain from seeking a restitution order against Loras for the 54000 Australian dollars approximately $35000 in damages he caused. The recommendation was made in consideration of Loras's extended period of homelessness. The arson attack on the East Melbourne Synagogue was unfortunately one of three suspected antisemitic incidents that occurred in Melbourne during the weekend of July 4 to July 6. On July 5 a group of around 20 masked protesters engaged in harassment directed at diners at an Israeli-owned restaurant. During the protest windows were damaged tables were overturned and chairs were thrown while the protesters chanted slogans such as Death to the IDF a reference to the Israel Defense Forces. In addition the police are actively investigating the spray-painting of a Melbourne business along with an arson attack that targeted three vehicles associated with that same business which occurred before dawn on July 6. Authorities indicated that they had found antisemitic inferences at the scene without specifying further details about the nature of those inferences
