The reputation of AAMI Park as a graveyard for the Waratahs has continued after a hungry Rebels team bagged a third straight win over NSW in Melbourne

The reputation of AAMI Park as a graveyard for the Waratahs lives on after a hungry Rebels team bagged a third straight win over NSW in Melbourne.

NSW staged a mini-rally in the second half and even led 20-17 after scoring two tries. But the Rebels re-asserted control against a visibly tiring NSW side which had seen four late changes due to injury. The hosts scored two more tries in the last quarter, including a lovely show-and-go solo score under the sticks by prop Matt Gibbon, and pushed away for the win.

The lacklustre Waratahs paid the price for poor discipline and sloppy handling, which not only prevented them from building consistent pressure but let the Rebels enter their territory with ease, and strike with clinical and willing attack. With only one win from three games, and a trip to Wellington up next week, NSW’s hopes of a top-four finish are already looking dicey.

After a number of late changes, that saw Ned Hanigan, Max Jorgensen, Dave Porecki and Te Tera Faulkner all ruled out, the Waratahs started unsettled and stayed unsettled for most of the first half. Two minutes later a superb line run by Langi Gleeson saw the No.8 surge through a gap and sprint 25 metres to the line, but a desperate tackle from Monty Ioane grassed him, and he was penalised for using a knee to push himself over the line. The Rebels turned the tables soon after, when an aimless NSW kick out of their half saw the ball land in Stacey Ili’s hands, and he offloaded for Lachie Anderson. The former sevens star chipped the last line of defence and Reece Hodge won the race to score.
