A new trailer divulges that the Brett Ratner feature on the first lady was shot over 20 days in January.
This Brett Ratner–directed Amazon MGM feature was announced almost a year ago; now we’re just over a month away from its premiere in theaters nationwide on January 30. But while we’ve known about this documentary’s arrival, we’ve had little indication of what exactly it might contain.
The new trailer makes it pretty clear that Ratner’s camera will follow Melania during the weeks before her husband’s return to the White House—allowing viewers to “witness history in the making” and her “20 days to become first lady,” according to text rendered in all caps. Melania is reportedly the result of a $40 million licensing deal with Amazon; according to The Wall Street Journal, the first lady will be pocketing about $28 million of it. If only $12 million was left over, that could explain why Melania appears to be a fly-on-the-wall film shot over a very short period of time. The documentary also has the distinction of being the first movie directed by Ratner since he was accused of sexual misconduct by several women in 2017, at the height of the #MeToo movement. Fittingly, the trailer shows the once and current first lady as she orbits her husband at a slight distance. The camera follows Melania into what appears to be a Cabinet meeting, where Trump says, “Our proudest legacy will be that of peacemaker.” Then Melania chimes in, offering him a slight edit: “Peacemaker and unifier.” It shows a sketch of the black-and-white Hervé Pierre gown she wore for inaugural night, along with a scene from its creation. It shows footage of Trump looking inside a refrigerator. The trailer’s most revealing moment comes at the end. The camera shows Melania as she talks on the phone in what looks to be her Trump Tower office. “Hi, Mr. President. Congratulations!” she says. We hear Trump’s response: “Did you watch it?” His wife responds dryly, “I did not. I will see it on the news.” This brief moment seems to neatly encapsulate Melania’s role in her husband’s political rise—she is reasonably nearby, vaguely interested, and content to consume the highlights after the fact. In a statement, the first lady described the film in gauzily distant terms, calling it a document of her “remarkable journey” navigating “family, business, and philanthropy.” “History is set in motion during the 20 days of my life prior to the US presidential inauguration,” Melania said. “For the first time, global audiences are invited into theaters to witness this pivotal chapter unfold.” The trailer doesn’t mark the first time Melania has tried to give viewers a carefully curated behind-the-scenes look at her life, to mixed results. In October 2024, she released a memoir, also called Melania, accompanied by an audiobook that offered narration by an AI Melania replica. At the time, Vanity Fair’s reviewer noted that the project “falls victim to Melania’s tendency to skate over useful information in favor of gassing up her husband.”
