MELAKA: The signs now indicate that Barisan Nasional may form a new Melaka government, following talk that 13 Umno lawmakers in the state are holding a meeting on Friday night (Feb 28) and plan to seek an audience with Yang-di Pertua Negeri Tun Dr Mohd Khalil Yaakob by Monday (Mar 2).
A source told The Star that Melaka Umno representatives were working to ensure that the most competent individual among them was nominated as Chief Minister.
However, Melaka Legislative Deputy speaker Datuk Dr Wong Fort Pin said the Melaka Pakatan Harapan was far from “sitting ducks”, and would not allow the state government to collapse. “We have contingency plans in place to ensure we safeguard the mandate of the people, even if the two are not keen to be part of Pakatan.
Meanwhile, a Melaka-based social activist Azizah Harun urged lawmakers from Pakatan not to use race and religion as the rationale for leaving the coalition.
