Queen Elizabeth dealth with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's Oprah sitdown after nearly losing Prince Philip, a new book says.
Writer Hugo Vickers writes in the upcomingthat Philip underwent heart surgery on March 1, 2021, shortly before his death and almost did not make it. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex's CBS primetime special had been pre-recorded before Philip became ill and the tell-all was broadcast on March 7 that year, meaning Elizabeth dealt with the fallout just days after nearly losing her husband, according to the book.
Harry and Meghan have made much of their bond with the queen over the years, including in a 2022 interview withHowever, several biographers have sought to present a different impression of the queen's attitude to the couple and their royal bombshells, including Vickers."The Queen took a dim view of her grandson," Vickers wrote,"Saying to a confidante: ‘And now Harry has opted out, and for what? To be a carer for Archie.’" "The following year, the Duke of Edinburgh, then aged 99, was admitted to the Edward VII Hospital in London for tests. On March 1, he was moved to St Bartholomew’s Hospital, where he had an operation on his heart. "His medical team nearly lost him twice. On Sunday, March 7, just six days later, with no consideration for the stress the Queen was under, or for the precarious health of the Duke of Edinburgh, a much-heralded interview between the Duchess of Sussex and Oprah Winfrey was screened," Vickers wrote.royal family member having what she described as"concerns and conversations" about how dark her unborn child's skin might be. In January 2023, Harry gave an interview to ITV in which he said she had not accused the royals of racism. Elizabeth responded to the Oprah Winfrey interview saying"some recollections may vary." Prince Philip died on April 9, 2021, just more than a month after the pre-recorded interview was broadcast on CBS. In the book, Vickers suggested the queen was suspicious of Harry and Meghan, writing:"Whenever Prince Harry called his grandmother, she asked her lady-in-waiting to stay with her. The distress the Sussexes caused the Queen in the last years of her life cannot be overestimated. "How do I know any of this? My new book is based on 60 years of observation and research, at first from afar but gradually closer to the centre and more focused."How Royals Reacted to Meghan and Harry's Relationship It has long been known that Prince William offended Harry by suggesting he slow down his relationship with Meghan but Vickers says that other senior royals, including the queen, agreed. "Even the Royal Family seemed to be bending unspoken rules for Markle," Vickers wrote."Unlike previous royal fiances, she was invited to join the Queen and the Royal Family at Sandringham for Christmas 2017, and attended church with the family. "The staff at Sandringham joyfully surrounded the couple at the annual Christmas party and nicknamed the actress ‘Sparkle’."The view Prince William expressed privately–that Harry should take more time to get to know her–contributed to a lasting rupture between the brothers. But their father also had doubts. Prince Charles took the line that Lord Mountbatten had taken with him before he started courting Diana: have fun, but don’t marry her. "The Queen herself suggested that Harry should wait a year. He did not take her advice. Instead, as we know, the wedding went ahead just over six months after the couple’s engagement."
