Ticket sales have been outpacing expectations ahead of the last few jackpots, meaning the grand prize could be even larger than $1.1 billion by the time Friday night’s drawing takes place. Only two other lottery jackpots in U.S. history have ever been larger than the current Mega Millions total. The largest Mega Millions prize ever was won in October 2018 when a player in South Carolina won $1.537 billion. The largest prize ever won in the U.S. came in January 2016 when three players split a $1.586 billion Powerball jackpot.Mega Millions drawings are held Tuesday and Friday at 11 p.m.
Mega Millions is played in 44 states, plus the District of Columbia and the Virgin Islands. Tickets cost $2 each.
