Watson notes that parents have an important role to play in guiding their children toward debt-free college. Her biggest piece of advice is simple: start as early as possible. Scholarship Solutions’ youngest client is just six months old.
Watson’s parents enrolled her in a federal program for low-income, first-generation students called Upward Bound when she was in the 6th grade. The program helped prepare Watson to enter college. By the time she was ready to attend school, she had earned five full-ride scholarships and the financial package for Brown.
“Being first-generation opened my eyes to possibilities. It allowed me to know there is a road map that I can create, a prescription that I can provide to help others gain the opportunity to go to college without any debt and not have the stresses and strains that some people have to operate with,” Watson said.
Watson gives her clients many other tools and resources to support their journey to debt-free education. In addition to advocacy, she also teaches her clients three other As.is about equipping students with the help they need to achieve the kinds of grades and results that land scholarships. One of her recommendations is tutoring for all students, even if their grades are already good.
“We do regular phone calls, text messages, and on-screen meetings to let scholars know that even the world has kind of stopped, scholarships and the college process did not. And when [scholars] follow the pathway, we have check ups and work in concert to make sure they maintain debt freedom,” Watson said.
