Meet the Coach muses that Stuart Vevers's references in the brand's spring 2021 lineup
Coach will turn 80 next year, and creative director Stuart Vevers got the party started with the spring collection. In place of a show, the brand presented the new season with a film and, both shot by Juergen Teller on a stellar cast that includes Megan Thee Stallion, Kate Moss, Cole Sprouse, and many other well-known names.
For spring, Coach’s offerings include reissues and interpretations of heritage pieces. The “C” logo is back, as is Debbie Harry, who sang Blondie’s 1979 hit “Dreaming” at the fall show back in February, before the nightmare of the pandemic began. For some time now, Vevers’s reveries have been focused on late 1970s and 1980s New York, particularly the city’s downtown art scene. The British designer was just seven years old when the Greed Decade began, but it cast a spell on him. Making appearances in the spring collection are the artists Keith Haring, whose portrait appears on a T-shirt, and Jean-Michel Basquiat, whose neo-Expressionist work appears on an already sold-out leather coat.
Vevers reissued a NASA-logo sweatshirt from a 2017 collection, but it could just as well be a nod to the American designerBonnie Cashin in 1966.Many of the familiar bag shapes, as well as the distinctive brass toggle hardware used throughout the spring lineup, are riffs on the work of Bonnie Cashin, a lauded American designer who joined Coach in 1962 and was known for her preference for smart-looking functional designs.
