From running Credit Suisse and Citi in Australia, to being involved in the biggest reshuffle at Citi in 25 years, David Livingstone says he wouldn’t have it any other way.
Already a subscriber?Australia’s top investment bankers wield plenty of power in our relatively small capital markets and banking fishbowl, but few go offshore to test their wares in much larger markets and in much bigger banking teams.
As chief client officer, Livingstone’s job is to make sure Citi’s big clients are serviced across the bank’s various products and groups – banking, capital markets, advice, etc – and, perhaps most importantly, oversee the bank’s capital allocation. Livingstone’s new job is a long way from his roots as an M&A banker. Brother of former CBA and Telstra chairman Catherine Livingstone, he grew up in Sydney, cut his teeth at Goldman Sachs, and worked at HSBC and Credit Suisse in Europe before returning to Sydney to run Credit Suisse Australia in 2010.“I always enjoyed M&A, but there was a time for it. Now my focus is elsewhere,” he says on a trip to Australia to meet clients.
Livingstone’s job at the top of Citigroup and his access to global clients also gives him a unique perspective on everything from deal flow to the way business is changing.
