Ronald Ellis moved to Nottingham from Jamaica when he was 34 and started carving in the 70s
A Nottingham man has shown off his impressive collection of more than 2,000 items carved out of wood. Ronald Ellis, 71, started developing his wood carving hobby in the 70s after picking up the trade from carvers in his home country, Jamaica.
"If they come along and say they like something I just tell them to take it because I can make another one." Ronald quickly realised he could make more complex creations compared to the cups and common souvenirs other carvers were making, and so he decided to create something different, later becoming the 'Aeroplane Man'.
After moving here from Ocho Rios, Jamaica, he gave up wood carving and worked various jobs, including roles at Pork Farms, Raleigh, and taxi driving for DG Cars. After 12 years as a taxi driver, Ronald was involved in a bad crash and had to leave his job because of an injury to his knee.
