'I'm part of this new wave of fandom, which is really exciting. This is all kind of a world of firsts for me in many ways.' More from SophiaNomvete ⬇️

: If you could be the main character in any TV show or movie that’s not your own, who would you be and why?Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom! They are musical, expressive, strong, free, hysterical, groundbreaking, inspiring, packed with emotion, and [there's an] extraordinary story, and writing… I’m not actually sure that I would want to play them having witnessed Viola Davis and Catherine O’Hara, they were perfect performances in the perfect parts that I wish I could claim as my own! So, I suppose...

“There is nothing that I don't like about playing Disa, absolutely nothing,” Nomvete says. ”There's no least favorite anything, and there can't be with Disa. But my favorite thing, I think, is playing all of her dimensions. There's a domesticity to her. She's a mother, she's a wife. I breastfed in the costume that you see me in. And she wrangles the kids, and she cries and she laughs loudly.

Nomvete’s Princess Disa marks the first time we’ve seen a female dwarf in live action outside of extras – according to Tolkien’s work, they’re rare and protected, treated like treasures and rarely if ever seen by outsiders. By placing Disa and Durin’s story “at home” in Khazad-dûm, we’re able to see the way that her casting urges the fandom to accept a Black dwarf in. At no point is Nomvete’s Disa “subservient,” Nomvete notes with a knowing smile.

“For someone like me and for women like us who have not necessarily been told that this vision that you see before you is beautiful, that this voice that you have has a place to be heard, that we do not have to be subservient to the men around us, that was a challenge for me because it's not something that I know,” Nomvete says, her tone strong and passionate.

“And of course, my daughter,” she continues. “I kept looking back at my daughter and my husband, going, ‘This is for you, this is for you.’ And so I had to find a self-worth that I have never thought possible in order to portray that character. And from here, I will never, ever look back.”
