From smashing shuttles to moulding champions 🏸 Harley Towler is now serving England's budding players
A former professional badminton player from Lincoln who once represented England continues to give back to the sport by coaching junior players.
By the time he’d played for 18 months, Harley triumphed at an Under-11s County Championships, clinching all three titles - singles, doubles, and mixed doubles.This success helped to propel him to national level competition. By the age of 10, he had earned a spot on the World Class Start Programme, through Badminton England.
In 2012, alongside Peter Briggs, Harley finished as runner-up in the men’s doubles at two BWF International Challenge tournaments - the Czech International and Welsh International. Harley enjoyed victory at the 2014 BWF International tournament event - Welsh International, where he and Matthew Nottingham overpowered Scotland’s Adam Hall and Gordon Thompson to win the men’s doubles title.
Harley also played in over 10 mixed doubles tournaments alongside Emily Westwood, who is now his girlfriend, during the 2014/15 season. “It was one of the biggest events I competed in,” he said. “Crowd wise, it’s completely different to the majority of European tournaments, with bigger crowds, louder atmosphere, and better quality competitors. It was a great experience.”
Unfortunately when Badminton GB lost funding in 2017, Harley was taken off the programme and he retired from playing the sport professionally. Harley’s coaching in the East Midlands saw him work with “some top junior players” including Lucy Brierley who he says has won multiple junior national and international level titles.
