“People living in cities around the world have no idea what this reality is like,” Pálína Axelsdóttir Njarðvík says. “So it’s a bit exotic for them, and maybe, in a way, something that they would like.” vogueworld
—an Instagram account devoted, appropriately, to day-to-day life on her family’s sprawling sheep farm in remote Skeiða- og Gnúpverjahreppur, Iceland—the 27-year-old shared pictures from the farm with her friends in Reykjavik. “I was posting sheep photos because I hang out quite a lot with the sheep when I’m home,” Njarðvík says. But her usual crowd’s enthusiasm was flagging.
“So I talked to one of my best friends, and I was like, ‘I was thinking about making a profile just for the farm life,’” Njarðvík explains. Her expectations were modest. “I thought it would be a bit embarrassing,” she says, “like a few hundred people might follow.” But now, nearly four years later, @farmlifeiceland boasts an audience of over 35,000.
“People living in cities around the world have no idea what this reality is like,” Njarðvík says. “So it’s a bit exotic for them, and maybe, in a way, something that they would like.” It’s still work, of course—feeding the sheep every morning; helping with chores around the 1,100-acre property—but it’s work of a quieter kind. “[We’re] a different kind of busy,” Njarðvík says. “There’s something nostalgic about it, I think.
Njarðvík’s mother’s family has run the same farm, which maintains a herd of some 300 sheep , for six generations. “We go back,” Njarðvík says. “I have relatives on the neighboring farms.” During lambing season, the busiest time of the year, having loved ones nearby is especially useful: Njarðvík and her uncles will spend up to 18 hours a day with the ewes, supervising the births—and they can use all the neighborly help that they can get.
To be sure, Njarðvík has a life outside of school and Gnúpverjahreppur; she loves sports, and travels as often as she can. But unlike her brother, who knew from the age of five that he wanted to be a doctor, not a farmer, Njarðvík isn’t ruling anything out. “Our parents have always encouraged us to do what we need to do,” she says. “I’ll be at the farm one way or another. . .my brother, my cousins and I will own the farm whether we take care of it ourselves, or not.
