Conjoined twins JamieLynn and AmieLynn Finley ahead of a surgery to separate the girls. The operation was the first of its kind to be performed at Cook Children's Medical Center in Fort Worth.Twins AmiLynn and JamieLynn Finley have had more specialized medical attention in their first 16 weeks than some people have in their entire lives.
Stanford Medicine Children’s Health reports that only about five separation surgeries are performed in the U.S. each year. If surgery is attempted, only about 60% of the twins survive, according to the Cleveland Clinic.The medical team operating on and caring for the twins began planning the surgery months before AmieLynn and JamieLynn were born. They printed 3D models of the twins’ chest and practiced what before, during and after the operation would look like.
Even the babies got in on the color coordination: Nurses colored the girls’ nails with their assigned color so there was no confusion in the operating room.
