hello to GLAAD's inaugural 20Under20!
When you hear the word ‘trailblazer,’ the name Emma González immediately comes to mind. A survivor of the High School shooting in February 2018, Emma has become one of the most notable young gun control activists in the world.
Following the shooting, Emma co-founded Never Again MSD, a student-led committee advocating for gun control reform to prevent gun violence. Emma and Never Again MSD were instrumental in organizing the historic #MarchForOurLives protest, the largest student demonstration in American history with over 2 million participants across the country.
, Emma represents one of the many visible LGBTQ people of color who have been at the forefront of powerful social movements and the fight for real cultural change. For Emma, visibility remains an essential part of how we move forward. “Sexuality, romantic attraction, and gender are such important aspects of our identities, and when we are growing up, we need healthy representation of those experiences in order to lead healthy lives,” Emma tells GLAAD.
Emma admits it is hard to choose just one LGBTQ person who inspires her. “There are Black LGBTQ+ people who inspire me to fight against white supremacy and oppression, disabled members of the LGBTQ+ community who inspire me to fight against ableism, imprisoned members of the LGBTQ+ community who inspire me to fight for prison abolition, and there are very young members of the LGBTQ+ community who inspire me to fight for change in our schools and in our media coverage.
