Archaeologists working at the Valley of the Temples Archaeological Park (VTAP) in Sicily, Italy, have unearthed a remarkable artifact: a mask mold believed to depict the mythological figure of Medusa. The discovery was made during excavations of house 18, a structure dating back to the late Republican period, which around the beginning of the 1st century BC was likely transformed into an artisan workshop specializing in mask production.
The mold itself portrays a stern-faced female with distinctive tresses of curly hair. The archaeologists believe the mask mold offers valuable insights into the artistic practices and symbolic culture of ancient Finziade, a Greek city founded in Sicily in 282 BCE. The discovery aligns with the understanding of Medusa as a powerful apotropaic symbol, used to ward off negativity and evil, much like the modern-day evil eye. In Greek mythology, Medusa is often depicted with a fearsome, grotesque visage or a more composed feminine appearance, and her serpentine hair adds to her intimidating aura.
