New research published Tuesday in Heart, a peer-reviewed medical journal, also reveals that a Mediterranean diet can lower mortality risk in women by 23%.

NEW SOUTH WALES, Australia -- A Mediterranean diet has long been associated with improved health, but new research reveals how the diet benefits women, specifically.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death for women in the U.S., and in 2020 was responsible for the deaths of 314,186 women – or approximately one in every five female deaths, according to theThe study also found a reduction in strokes amongst women who consume a Mediterranean diet, but noted the findings were “not statistically significant.” This is the first female-only meta-analysis on a Mediterranean diet’s impact on health, according to the study’s authors.
