Medina Spirit has been stripped of his Kentucky Derby win and trainer Bob Baffert has been suspended after the horse tested positive for a banned medication
Medina Spirit, who died Monday at Santa Anita, was an underdog who won the Kentucky Derby. But a potential disqualification could alter how he is perceived.
Baffert’s attorneys tried to use the defense that the rule that was violated only covers betamethasone that is injected intra-articularly, not by ointment. Additional tests were performed by Baffert’s attorneys that showed the presence of a secondary substance that is found only in the ointment. The KHRC didn’t accept that argument.
Baffert is not only banned from Churchill Downs, but horses trained by him are ineligible to receive Kentucky Derby qualifying points. He has built his business around being able to get horses to the Kentucky Derby, a race he has won seven times, now dropped to six. The New York Racing Assn. is also trying to ban Baffert from its tracks, even though he has had no medication violations in that state. A week-long hearing was held in late January and a decision is pending.Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit’s necropsy could not establish a cause of death but signs were consistent with a cardiac event. No unexpected drugs found.
