The findings come as Texans say they are facing increasing barriers to homeownership and as state lawmakers search for ways to combat high costs.

The median home price in Texas jumped nearly 40% from 2019 to 2023, according to a new report from Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar ’s office, the latest sign it’s becoming less affordable to live in most places across the state. Hegar warned that skyrocketing housing prices threaten the state’s economic growth and said a big part of the problem is not having enough homes to keep pace with demand. “My family moved here in the 1840s,” he said.

San Antonio home sales, inventory back to pre-pandemic levels; prices, mortgage rates remain high The jump in median home prices mirrored a larger increase nationally, according to the report. In Texas, the median home price has been rising incrementally since 2012, jumping in 2021 and peaking at $340,000 in 2022. It fell slightly in 2023.

Eyeing successes in Austin, San Antonio council member proposes policies to spur affordable housing But lawmakers from both parties are increasingly looking to increase the overall supply of housing by altering or rolling back local zoning laws, which dictate what can be built and where. Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and House Speaker Dade Phelan have tasked legislators in both chambers with tackling housing affordability in the next legislative session.
