It has been 1,962 years since Boudica led a revolt against the Roman Empire, 435 years since Elizabeth I repelled the Spanish Armada, 44 years since the rise of Margaret Thatcher, 33 years since Joan Kirner became Victoria’s first female Premier and 13 years since Julia Gillard ticked off the same ‘first’ for Australia.
You’d have been forgiven for forgetting that long line of female leaders as you listened to Jacinta Allan’s first press conference as Victorian Premier.“I know that along my journey young women have talked to me about my journey and how they can learn from that, hopefully learn from some of the slings and arrows and not have that repeated.
The media dutifully played along with Ms Allan as she stomped on the long-since shattered shards of Victorian politics’ glass ceiling. In an on-brand tweet, radio presenter Patricia Karvelas said how excited she was to tell her daughters there was a woman leader in their state. It’s pretty much the only thing the casual political observer would know about the new leader of Victoria.
First, it’s a diversion from the litany of systemic problems that Victoria faces, from corruption, to crippling government debt, to a tourism sector still suffering from the reputational damage of draconian COVID lockdowns.Unfortunately, this card is still played regularly in western politics, to the detriment of political accountability and sound governance.
It reduces the extraordinary achievement of leading a state of Australia to a mere diversity, equity and inclusion award.
