Public Health - Seattle & King County announced on Wednesday a confirmed measles case in an adult who traveled through Sea-Tac airport last week while infectious. The individual, a resident of Alaska, was likely exposed to measles while traveling abroad. Public Health officials noted that the person's vaccination status is unknown. Dr.
Eric Chow, Communicable Disease Chief for Public Health – Seattle & King County, emphasized the highly contagious nature of measles, stating that individuals without immunity can contract it simply by being in a space previously occupied by an infected person. He highlighted the global and U.S. increase in measles cases, underscoring the importance of verifying vaccination status and receiving the necessary vaccinations for protection. The measles vaccine demonstrates high effectiveness. Public Health reports that two doses of the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine provide approximately 97% protection against measles infection, with this protection lasting a lifetime. The infected individual visited several public locations before receiving a measles diagnosis. Public Health - Seattle & King County issued a media release detailing these locations and times, which encompassed the period when the individual was present and two hours afterward. The measles virus can persist in the air for up to two hours after an infectious person departs the area. The agency specified that anyone present at the following locations during the designated times could have been exposed: Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, S Concourse (Gate S8), from International Arrivals Facility through Customs, Baggage Claim (Carousel 21), and then exiting to connect at D Concourse (Gate D7) between approximately 2:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. Public Health warned that if exposed and not immune to measles, individuals might develop symptoms between January 17, 2025, and January 31, 2025, while immunocompromised individuals might experience a longer symptom incubation period. Public Health asserted that most individuals in the area possess measles immunity through vaccination, thus minimizing the general public risk. However, they urged anyone potentially exposed at the listed locations to take the following steps: ascertain their measles vaccination history or prior measles infection; ensure they are up-to-date on recommended MMR vaccinations; promptly contact a healthcare provider if they develop fever or an unexplained rash; and avoid visiting clinics or hospitals without prior notification to alert staff of potential measles exposure. They also advised limiting contact with others, particularly those with unknown immunity
