The Marvel Cinematic Universe has a problem with Scarlet Witch, and the upcoming sequel to WandaVision puts it on full display. With the release of WandaVision, Scarlet Witch was briefly one of the most important characters in the MCU.
She was the main antagonist of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and the comics recently named her the new Sorcerer Supreme. Despite her importance and popularity, the MCU seemingly has no idea what to do with Scarlet Witch. The Earth-616 version of her died in Doctor Strange, and Elizabeth Olsen has made some discouraging comments about the future of the character in upcoming movies like Avengers: Doomsday. One upcoming show really solidifies the MCU's problem with Scarlet Witch: it's building off her legacy without including her. Vision Quest Is Another WandaVision Sequel Without Scarlet Witch After Agatha All Along, the next sequel to WandaVision is Vision Quest, a series focusing on White Vision after regaining the original Vision's memories and leaving Westview. As the title implies, White Vision is likely going on a quest to define his own identity and reconcile his regained memories with his lack of emotional connection to people like Wanda. That also implies that Scarlet Witch won't be in yet another WandaVision sequel. Wanda didn't appear in Agatha All Along at all, as the series followed Agatha Harkness three years after the events of WandaVision and after Wanda had already died at the end of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The MCU is clearly interested in continuing stories that are directly related to Scarlet Witch, but it has seemingly no interest in including Scarlet Witch in them. Wanda's family and enemies are still important to the MCU, but Wanda herself seemingly isn't. What Elizabeth Olsen Has Said About The Future Of Scarlet Witch What makes Scarlet Witch's lack of recent appearances even more frustrating is that Elizabeth Olsen has said that there's nothing for the character on the horizon, either. Vision Quest's exact place in the MCU timeline isn't clear yet, but Elizabeth Olsen has already publicly stated that she only heard about the show after it was filmed . Olsen also said that Wanda won't be in Avengers: Doomsday . Olsen confirmed she’s not in Avengers: Doomsday and admitted she has"no idea how or when" Wanda might reappear. "I’ve been really proud of what we’ve been able to make. Really proud. But I don’t have an answer for that." "Well, I can’t . Honestly, I do wait. I want to see return in this role because I think what they’ve done with her is really great, and I love the journey she’s taken. I think it’s always a fun one to get to go back into, and I just have no idea how or when, for sure." While it's always possible that Olsen could be obfuscating the return of Scarlet Witch — Marvel is notoriously secretive about upcoming actor appearances — her comments seem genuine. Olsen seems like she wants to return as Scarlet Witch and would jump at the chance to reprise the role. Her comments also seem to indicate that she's disappointed that the MCU has no current plans to make that role reprisal a reality. Will Wanda Return In Avengers: Doomsday? All of this, Scarlet Witch's lack of upcoming appearances and Elizabeth Olsen's discouraging comments, fuel one central question: will Wanda be part of the cast of Avengers: Doomsday? The answer is a bit tricky. It certainly looks like Scarlet Witch will be left out of Doomsday, considering her fate in Doctor Strange and Olsen's comments. However, there's no way to tell until Doomsday is actually in theaters. There's also still plenty of opportunity for Scarlet Witch to be in Doomsday. We already know that the movie will deal heavily with the multiverse and variants of familiar heroes from different dimensions. The Fantastic Four and Doctor Doom, for example, will be taken from Earth-828 and put into Earth-616. That means it's entirely possible that a different variant of Scarlet Witch, possibly even Earth-828's version of her, could appear in Doomsday. For now, Scarlet Witch fans will just have to hope that the MCU can figure out how to treat her better.
