As it stands, an ongoing villain trend in the MCU's Phase 5 is not looking going when considering the upcoming release of Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Summary The MCU's Phase 5 is breaking a villain record which does not bode well for Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. Set to release in 2026, the fifth Avengers movie will reportedly feature a new iteration of Earth's Mightiest Heroes as they face the rising threat that is Kang the Conqueror, presumably along with his many variants who've been seen through Marvel's Multiverse Saga.
However, recent Kang appearances in Phase 5 are starting to establish a concerning precedent. Currently, Jonathan Majors' latest appearance as a Kang variant can be seen in Loki season 2. This time he's playing the inventor Victor Timely as opposed to the now-deceased He Who Remains from Loki season 1, the founder of the Time Variance Authority whose death has resulted in major changes to the MCU timeline and multiverse. However, whether its these variants featured in Loki, the exiled Kang in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, or the thousands of variants featured in the movie's post-credits scene known as the Counfil of Kangs, a pattern has begun to form that threatens to sabotage Kang's reputation ahead of Avengers 5. The MCU Has Killed Kang Off Three Times Already Twice in Loki and Once in Ant-Man 3 As seen in Loki season 1's finale, He Who Remains was killed by the Loki variant Sylvie . This in turn freed the Sacred Timeline which He Who Remains had carefully constructed via the TVA to prevent the existence of his variants and another Multiversal War. Now, the ongoing Loki season 2 has featured Victor Timely whom the TVA believed could help them stabilize their Temporal Loom in danger of overloading from the influx of branched timelines. However, Timely was surprisingly ripped apart by temporal radiation in Loki season 2, episode 4. As such, his fate in the MCU's future is currently unknown. At the same time, Phase 5's first MCU movie Ant-Man the Wasp: Quantumania saw Scott Lang and his family leading a resistance in the subatomic Quantum Realm against a variant of Kang the Conqueror who'd been exiled by the Council of Kangs. At the end of the movie, this exiled Kang met his demise after he was pulled into his own multiversal engine core which had been damaged. As such, three different versions of Kang have already been defeated and/or killed in Marvel's Phase 5. Why Avengers 5 Needs To Fix Kang's MCU Reputation Is The True Threat of Kang Being Diminished? All in all, Kang dying three separate times in the MCU does make him look less intimidating, even if countless more variants are theoretically waiting in the wings to become the major threat of Avengers 5. Regardless, the MCU will likely need to find a way to quickly establish a strong configuration for the villain and/or villains of The Kang Dynasty very soon. As it stands, Kang is starting to build up a less-than-intimidating reputation in the current Phase 5. Perhaps Kang's diminishing reputation will be corrected in Loki season 2's finale with a major twist for Victor Timely or with some other variant that gets introduced in the near future. Even if the true threat of Kang is that he can always be replaced by another variant, that level of high-stakes danger needs to be better defined going forward in the MCU for such as powerful comic villain ahead of Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.
