The deadly McKinney Fire, which has so far consumed nearly 60,000 acres in the Klamath National Forest, began underneath a power line circuit that had trouble just hours earlier, the NBC Bay Area Investigative Unit has learned.
The company said it patrolled the entire course of the line but was unable to determine the cause of the earlier outage.
The utility only said that it doesn’t know of any of its equipment being seized as part of the investigation into the fire, adding: “Our understanding is the cause of the McKinney Fire remains under investigation and we continue to work with first responders in affected communities.” Whatever touched off the fire, Klamath River chief Jones says bad luck played a big role in turning it into a disaster that led to four deaths.
