Doug McDermott scored 22 of his 30 points in the fourth quarter and overtime, and the Spurs denied the Kings a chance at clinching the Pacific Division.
Doug McDermott broke out for a season-high 30 points to help lead the Spurs to an upset win over the Pacific Division-leading Kings on Sunday night.PHOENIX — A record crowd of 18,183 showed up for the Sacramento Kings' game with the Spurs on Sunday at Golden 1 Center expecting a major celebration.
Sacramento was playing at home for the first time since ending the longest playoff drought in NBA history — 16 seasons — with a win last week at Portland. But it was the lowly Spurs who played like a team bound for the postseason rather than one that has lost enough to guarantee the best odds at winning the No. 1 pick in the lottery.
Champagnie tallied 22 points on 8 of 10 shooting in the first half. McDermott overcame a slow start after sitting out two games in a row with a tender elbow to pump in 13 in the fourth quarter on 5 of 7 and nine in OT. The Spurs improved to 20-58 after outscoring the Kings 19-11 in the extra frame to win their first game to claim their first OT game this season in six attempts. With four games left, including Tuesday's outing against the Suns, the Spurs have matched the win total of the 1996-97 team that set the club record for fewest in a season.De'Aaron Fox's 28 points led the Kings, who also got 26 points from Domantas Sabonis.
Undrafted rookie Dominick Barlow also had a big night, finished with his first career double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, both season highs, to go along with two blocks and a steal. "Julian stepped up huge for us," Jones said."He’s been ready every single time his number has been called. He continues to stay ready, continues to work on his game, watches film and everything, asks important questions. And Doug is just Doug. He can get it going at anytime. All he needs is one little inch to get it off."The Spurs are on track to finish the season as the worst defensive team in league history, but they came up with some huge stops late.
