Spurs’ Doug McDermott, Josh Richardson welcome role as old heads
San Antonio Spurs guard Josh Richardson talks with Josh Primo , Tre Jones , Keita Bates-Diop, left, and Zach Collins during the second half of the team's NBA basketball game against the Golden State Warriors on Saturday, April 9, 2022, in San Antonio. The Warriors won 100-94. The way Doug McDermott sees it, the most important moment of the Spurs’ offseason came Aug. 9.
It is not the situation McDermott envisioned when he signed a three-year, $42 million contract with the Spurs in the summer of 2021. Richardson was jettisoned from Boston last season a few months before the Celtics’ run to the NBA Finals.Richardson makes no bones about the fact any veteran in his shoes would want to be a part of a postseason contender.
Richardson appeared in 21 games after the trade from Boston, averaging 11.4 points and hitting 44.4 percent from 3-point range. If there’s one general truth McDermott says he has tried to impart to the Spurs’ newbies, it’s that an NBA season is long and — especially for a rookie — there are likely to be more bad days than good ones.
