GLORIA FERNIZ, a landmark to many on the South Side of San Antonio before its sad decline, opened 61 years ago this week.
“We’ve built big to take care of the demands for the future,” developer G. Sealie McCreless told the San Antonio Express in 1960.These photos show what shopping at Rivercenter Mall was like around the time it opened in 1988 On opening day, crowds watched as Mayor W.W. McAllister placed a hermetically sealed, stainless steel time capsule in a cement block. Inside was a copy of the San Antonio Light recording of Col. John Glenn’s historic flight into space and a copy of the newspaper’s March 28, 1962, edition, which featured several McCreless sections.J.C.
