Senator Mitch McConnell, who has faced a series of health issues in recent years, was seen using a wheelchair after a fall at the Capitol on Wednesday. His office said he is fine and the incident is purely precautionary.

Senator Mitch McConnell, 82, experienced a fall at the Capitol on Wednesday, leading to him using a wheelchair for precautionary reasons. While leaving the Senate chamber after a Republican caucus lunch, McConnell was seen falling down a small set of stairs. Senator Steve Daines, who was walking behind McConnell, assisted him back to his feet. McConnell initially walked to the lunch on his own but was later observed returning to the lunchroom in a wheelchair.

A spokesperson for McConnell stated that the senator is fine and that the lingering effects of polio in his left leg will not disrupt his work schedule. The use of a wheelchair is purely precautionary. This incident follows a series of health challenges McConnell has faced in recent years, including falls, episodes of freezing, and a concussion. In December 2022, he sustained a minor facial cut and wrist sprain after a fall at the Capitol. In 2023, he experienced two episodes of freezing during press conferences, one in July at the Capitol and another in August while speaking to reporters in Kentucky. During the D.C. incident, McConnell remained silent for 19 seconds. Earlier in 2023, he was hospitalized and treated for a concussion after tripping at a Washington, D.C. hotel. In 2019, he fractured his shoulder after a fall at his Kentucky home. Despite these health concerns, McConnell continues to serve in the Senate and chairs the Senate Rules Committee. He has not announced his intentions regarding the 2026 election, although he previously stated his plan to finish his current Senate term, which expires in 2027
