McCollum overcame an eight-point first-quarter deficit, and Zoey Yanez and Aaliyah Mancha led the Cowboys over MacArthur to take control of the 28-5A girls race
After sharing a district championship for two straight seasons, McCollum wants to win one outright, and the Cowboys took a major step in reaching that goal on Friday with a 54-42 victory at MacArthur. The Cowboys rallied from an eight-point hole after the first quarter, locked down on defense and let it fly from the arc to stretch their lead in the District 28-5A standings to 2 ½ games with four remaining. McCollum is 12-0 in district. Jay is 9-2, and MacArthur is 9-3.
South San beats Southwest, sets eyes on Jay and potential share of first place Espinoza was the main defender on the Brahmas’ leading scorer, Ellie Lee, who finished with seven points, which is 11 below her average. The Cowboys were led by Yanez and Mancha, who each scored 11 points and had three treys. Both were impressive performances considering Yanez sat out most of the first quarter, and Mancha didn’t score until the second half.
