The 14th-ballot failure followed a dramatic series of pressure campaigns that played out live on the House floor, as McCarthy and his allies pushed for Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) to back the Californian, only to fall short as he voted present.
Rep. Matt Gaetz is expected to flip his vote after midnight on Saturday, a shift that would deliver Kevin McCarthy the speakership if the previous ballots hold.
The floor descended into a scene of chaos as McCarthy fell short, with Rep. Mike Rogers having to be pulled away from Gaetz by Rep. Richard Hudson after Rogers leaned in toward the Florida Republican. McCarthy, speaking to the press, said he would have the votes needed for election when it came back into session.

“Mr. McCarthy doesn’t have the votes today. He will not have the votes tomorrow, and he will not have the votes next week, next month, next year,” Gaetz, one of McCarthy’s most ardent opponents, said to jeers from other Republicans on the floor. “Is this an exercise in vanity?” for speaker, continued making his remarks. Boebert nominated Rep.The ongoing negotiations appear not to have yielded much progress among McCarthy’s most dug-in dissenters.
