CNN host Manu Raju pressed former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy on Donald Trump's claim that Vice President Kamala Harris is 'mentally disabled.' McCarthy repeatedly evaded the question, refusing to condemn Trump's remarks and instead pivoting to Republican talking points about border security.
“You’re okay with saying ‘mentally disabled, that’s the bottom line,” CNN host Manu Raju told former GOP House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, who couldn't give a straight answer.
Instead, McCarthy insisted they focus on “what was said before and what was said after” and rolled into Republican talking points about illegal immigration, flagging Immigration and Customs Enforcement datathat said over 13,000 immigrants convicted of homicide in the U.S. or abroad are living outside of the agency’s detention facilities.
Asked twice more about about Trump’s “mentally disabled” attack, McCarthy asked “do you think anybody would be mentally stable” for pursuing certain border policies and that he would “question your mental capacity” if you supported policies he attacked, in each case reverting back to his talking points.
