“We expect him to pay the workers what he stole from them” – Trade unions are calling on Finance Minister Tito Mboweni to reverse his stance on not increasing public servants’ salaries when he delivers his speech on his emergency revised budget next month

The National Treasury this week published special adjustment budget guidelines on its site, which include deadlines for departments to make submissions on their adjustment budgets.

With or without a definitive date in place, trade union federation Cosatu and its affiliate union, the National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union , have chosen to strike while the iron is hot, calling on Mboweni to use this “second chance” to make amends and try to fix his fractured relationship with workers.

In his last budget speech, Mboweni proposed a tricky and contentious budget balancing act that hinged on reducing the public sector wage bill by R160.2 billion over the next three years.Cosatu and Nehawu are now urging the minister to use this emergency budget to fix his relationship with public servants who feel hard done by.

"We do expect him to pay the workers what he stole from them. Our affiliated unions are busy with conciliation and mediation processes, and the federation will support their actions, but cannot by law pursue a parallel process," said Pamla,Frontline workers in the fight against the Covid-19 coronavirus “do not deserve this kind of treatment”, especially given the sacrifices that they made for the country, he said.
