Statistics don’t tell the entire story with Smith. For the record, he finished the 2022 season with 23 solo tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and a half sack. He finished four of the 14 games with at least three solo tackles.
“Well they knew I could do it,” he said. “So they put me in the position, my senior year, so they knew I could do it. But I also wanted to win the game and win the Big 10 Championship and I knew that if we were going to do that, we have to stop the run.” Smith thought about leaving for the NFL after his junior season but didn’t like where some scouts had projected him. So his return was about helping his school and draft stock.
