Mazda Australia axed slow-selling mild-hybrid versions of its 3 and CX-30 in 2023, but despite looming emissions regulations it says it has no plans to reverse this decision. It also doesn’t plan to bring mild-hybrid versions of other models, like its 2 and CX-5, to local showrooms. “If those technologies are available and there is a market demand, we can always consider and explore.

This system uses a small generator to capture energy normally wasted during braking, storing it and using it to assist the engine; the system also powers the vehicle’s electrical systems. In Europe, the CX-5’s 2.5-litre e-Skyactiv G mild-hybrid powertrain was recently rolled out to the Mazda 3 and CX-30. This produces 103kW of power and 238Nm of torque. Mazda also continues to offer the 3 and CX-30 with its 2.5-litre e-Skyactiv X mild-hybrid powertrain overseas, producing 137kW and 240Nm.
