Mayors and lawmakers from cities targeted by President Trump’s deployment of camouflage-clad agents from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security ramped up their responses on Monday, arguing it’s the president who is out of control—not their cities.The mayors of Portland, Oregon, Seattle, Washington, D.C., and Chicago—cities where Trump has threatened to or already has sent federal forces—joined Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms and Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas in penning ato U.S.

The letter calls for the immediate withdrawal of the DHS agents in Portland, who the mayors say are violating fundamental constitutional protections and tenets of federalism, and condemns Trump’s continued threats—and history—of using federal forces against protesters. The mayors point out that these “paramilitary-type forces” were not requested and often lack critical crowd management de-escalation training; they also critique a lack of “oversight for the actions” of the officers and failure to comply with local rules, like the ban on the use of tear gas and less-than-lethal weapons in Portland.
