Coun Stuart Hirst, the Mayor of Ribble Valley, sang with Longridge Band at the latest full meeting of the council
A Lancashire mayor who also a choir singer performed with his local brass band, described as one the UK’s oldest, for a début show of Christmas songs and music at Ribble Valley Borough Council’s chamber.
As the current mayor, Coun Hirst chairs full borough council meetings, represents the council at community and civic events, and supports various charities, But this event was a bit different. Tables where borough councillors usually sit depending on their political party and role were rearranged to make space for members of Longridge Band and their instruments.Introducing the musicians, Coun Hirst said to councillors: “You’ll know that football clubs play in a range of divisions.
There were traditional Christmas carols and music along with light-hearted festive songs such as ‘Jingle Bells’, during which the mayor shook some sleigh bells. In addition to singing, the major directed different groups of councillors around the chamber to sing along in different parts of songs. The vicar of St Peter’s Church at Salesbury, the Rev Liz McLean, was also there. She is the mayor’s chaplain this year and usually begins council meetings with some thoughts and a prayer.
