Between 2017 and 2024, the woman stole thousands of dollars by targeting Montgomery city employees' through their health insurance claims.
A scam targeting city employees spanned more than seven years, investigators saidByMONTGOMERY, Ala. - “Deeply troubling,” was the reaction of Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed Thursday regarding a woman’s theft of nearly a half a million dollars from the City. The woman, Kelli Sayers Burt , was a former insurance company employee who is now sentenced for her crimes.
Judge Greg Griffin sentenced her to two years in the county jail, split to serve one year day for day. That means she’ll spend a year behind bars, according to Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall. Between 2017 and 2024, Burt, who handled city employees’ health insurance claims, used those employees’ identities more than 330 times to divert insurance reimbursements into her own bank account, the AG’s office said. In total, she caused the City of Montgomery losses of more than $465,000.
