John Cádiz Klemack reports for the NBC4 News at 6 a.m. on June 10, 2026. The brother of Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass is suing the city that she serves after he lost his Malibu home in the 2025 Palisades Fire, a multi-plaintiff complaint revealed.
Kenneth Bass was listed as one of the plaintiffs who are blaming the LA Department of Water and Power under the city government, accusing the LADWP of failing to manage the water supply system and leaving the Santa Ynez Reservoir empty. Kenneth Bass and his wife Cindy claim that they suffered smoke inhalation from the wildfire, which also led to the couple's emotional distress and mental anguish.
In response to the complaint, Mayor Bass's Office released a statement, saying that"there's nothing new" to the story as she has publicly talked about her brother's loss.
"Thousands of people are plaintiffs in this action, which names 18 public and private sector defendants. The City Attorney's Office is responsible for defending the City and DWP in this lawsuit," the mayor's office said. Bass mentioned her brother during a townhall last year, adding that he has been living in the Malibu area for 40 years. The timing isn't ideal for the mayor who is seeking reelection after failing to win the primary election last week outright.
Her handing of the Palisades Fire will likely once again highlighted as her brother joined the lawsuit. The latest lawsuit is one of several filed by Palisades and Malibu residents, who claim the city and state are liable for failing to put out the Lachman Fire, which had been smoldering for a week before exploding into the Palisades Fire, according to authorities.
