Mayor Eric Johnson’s State of the City address must stress urgency | Opinion

When Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson delivers his annual State of the City address today, his message undoubtedly will include a list of accomplishments and steps that the city must take to shape a prosperous future.
Getting the basics right also requires Dallas city government to be faster and smarter. Otherwise, efforts to combat homelessness, end permitting inefficiency, add affordable housing citywide and address any number of other challenges will fall short. The City Council, which is in the midst of a sunset review process of city departments, programs and regulations that Johnson called for a year ago, must underscore the need for city government to be nimbler and more entrepreneurial, including in hiring and firing city workers and executing core responsibilities. In business terms, this means meeting customer needs and delivering goods and services on time.
