Investigators are searching for the cause of a house fire that killed five people in Paterson , New Jersey , on Halloween night, including the cousin of a New Jersey state Assembly member, according to the city's mayor.
The flames broke out Friday night at a house on Emerson Avenue in Paterson, officials in Passaic County confirmed Saturday. Seven people on the first floor of the home on Emerson Avenue escaped. Three of the dead are children, who were killed after being trapped inside the fast-moving fire. One of the adult victims, Abu Hedba, 39, was identified as the father of the household, said Paterson Mayor André Sayegh. Hedba was the cousin of Assemblyman Al Abdelaziz, according to the mayor.The names of the other victims who died have not been released, but include a 38-year-old woman, and children who were aged 14, 12, and seven. "My wife called me and said our next door house is on fire. It’s going to come to our house," said neighbor Samad Hussain. The side of his home showed signs of melting from the intense flames and heat. And I told my dad to come up front and take that hose and try to do it from there," Hussain said. Sayegh noted that strong wind exacerbated the fire:"So many people are grief-stricken in the community, and they're going to need some healing as well."
